Solar Power: Frequently Asked Questions

Does having solar power mean that I can run some electric appliances during a power outage?
The solar system is designed such that it will not produce power during an outage. This protects the Utility workers that are repairing the power problem to your home.
What is the lifetime of solar panels?
The Solar panels are expected to produce 80% of their original power at 30 years. So we anticipate that they should be able to remain in service at least that long.
Is a solar installation allowed by my zoning and homeowner association rules?
Zoning laws and association rules are different from one community to the next. It is always best to check with local authorities and associations before proceeding. The solar panels we install resemble a large skylight on the roof.
Do we really get enough sunshine in Michigan for solar panels to be effective?
Michigan's solar days are adequate to produce a substantial amount of power. The panels will also produce some power on overcast days as well.
Do I have to get up on my roof in the winter and keep snow off the panels?
Panel covered by snow up to 4" will still produce power. Once the panel warms up the snow will slide off the panels so there is no need to clean them off.
How do I keep track of how much electricity I am generating?
There are two ways to keep track of the power you are generating. The utility company will install a generator meter which keeps track of all the energy coming from the solar panels to your home. Secondly, the Enphase monitoring system we include with your installation tracks and records the energy produced by your panels on a website. For an example, click to see an active system in Saline, MI.
How can I tell if all the panels and equipment are working properly?
The enphase monitoring system will not only track energy production but it will alert you in the event of a malfunction in your system.
How does a solar panel installation affect the resale value of my home?
Solar panels are like any other improvement to your home and should increase the market value of the house.
